The Coiled Tubing Hanger/Catcher provides a means of supporting coiled tubing downhole during a coiled tubing hang-off, when coiled tubing is used to recomplete a well through existing tubing. The weight of the coiled tubing is generally supported completely on the upper packer in a straddle operation or totally on the surface hanger when the coil is run to the surface. Utilizing the Hanger/Catcher the coiled re-completion can be spaced out so that the coiled tubing weight is split by the Hanger/Catcher in tension and the surface hanger and another Hanger/Catcher set in compression. This reduces the stress on the coil tubing string and prolongs its life. The Hanger/Catcher also serves as a safety device catching the coil should it part or be dropped downhole.
The Hanger/Catcher is designed for situations where the ability to rotate the tubing to actuate the Hanger/Catcher is not available (as with coiled tubing). It is ideal for hanging in compression to relieve weight from the coiled tubing (hanger/catcher) or in tension to be circulated around at all times. It is set and released by set-down and pick-up motion on the tubing, and can be set and released multiple times in one run.
